Smart home in Stockholm: design the system before buying devices

A smart home rarely improves by adding more apps and gateways. The important part is architecture: what works locally, what depends on cloud services, how the network is built and what happens when the internet connection is unavailable.

Architecture

Start with use cases, not brands

Define scenarios first: lighting, temperature, presence, energy use, security and remote control. Once the goals are clear, it becomes easier to choose between wired systems, Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee or proprietary mesh solutions.

A common mistake is to buy individual products first and integrate them later. That often produces several apps, separate accounts and automations that depend on changing cloud services.

Network

Your router is part of the smart-home system

Wi‑Fi coverage, IoT segmentation, remote access, local gateways and device security should be considered together. A thermostat or gateway is only as reliable as the communication around it. The same network design can also support device-specific access rules and schedules.

Electrical + control

Separate regulated electrical work from integration

Programming scenarios, configuring gateways and integrating networks is not the same as modifying a fixed electrical installation. Where work touches the electrical installation, Swedish electrical-safety rules apply. Splitting the project into electrical, networking, control and software layers makes responsibilities clear and reduces the risk of buying incompatible equipment.

A robust smart home can be implemented in stages. Good planning makes gradual expansion easier.
